The Ultimate Guide to the Southport Air Show

Trips to the coast are one of the great joys of the traditional British summer experience: fish and chips, the seaside and in this instance… Southport Air Show.

This annual event began in 1991 and has returned to Southport ever since. The two-day spectacular is the largest Air Show in the North West and attracts tens of thousands of spectators that return year after year to see the marvellous displays and aerial stunts from attendees such as the Red Arrows, Typhoons and Lancaster Bombers… To name a few!

As you can probably imagine, the town centre simply comes alive every year, and we think it’s one of the best times to visit Southport.

Attending the Southport Air show in 2023? Here’s everything you need to know before you attend.

Is the Southport Air Show suitable for children? Fear not, the words “I’m bored” will not mutter from those mouths! The Southport Air Show is an exhilarating and unique day out for the whole family. In between the main action in the sky, your little ones can keep occupied on the ground with flight simulators, climbing walls, trampolines and more. A weekend of fun, action and new memories await your little adventurers! Top Tip: the aircraft jets are loud, we’d advise bringing child sized headsets to block out the noise and prevent any tears!

Where has the best views? The most popular spots to view the show are the prom, beach and pier. For the very best views of the daring aerobatics of the historical aircrafts, we’d recommend heading to our Rooftop Bar and Garden as you sit back and keep cool with a chilled glass in hand! And if you’re worried about the unreliability of our Great British weather, pull up a seat in The Green Room instead and enjoy the 180-degree views of the Marina and beyond as you witness the spectacular air displays.

Best way to travel?

We’d advise leaving the car at home and using public transport instead to ensure you don’t miss out on the action and beat the traffic!

The closest train station to the event is Southport Train Station, just a ten-minute stroll away. If you do decide to drive, leave plenty of time to arrive as the roads to tend to get congested. Southport Air Show also has it’s very own radio station to keep you updated on the traffic and directional signage is around to help navigate you to the best parking spots.

Best places to dine?

We might be biased, but our menus are filled with many meal time favourites, so you can breathe a sigh of relief when it comes to dinner time! Settle into your seat at the Waterfront Bar and Kitchen with a chilled drink and delicious dish, ready to recount the days adventures.

Where to stay in Southport?

If you’re planning on staying for the whole air show weekend, Waterfront Southport Hotel is the place to be. Catch up on some zzz’s and enjoy some well-deserved down time after an actioned packed weekend in our picture-perfect bedrooms. If you’re looking to really treat yourself, upgrade your stay with a night in one of our Penthouses. You’ll feel just like royalty as you enjoy the sweet views of the seaside and beyond.
